ML Buddies

Buddy Program

One of the most important elements of a Miracle League game is the "buddy" program. Each player is paired with an able-bodied friend to assist them on and off the field during a two-inning game. Buddies can be fellow schoolmates, parents, college or high school students, athletes, business leaders, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts or any individual or group who wishes to volunteer their time to give the gift of baseball and a smile that touches us all.

Player buddies must be 12 years or older. Enthusiasm and compassion are key.  Become a "buddy" and you will be captivated by how much you are needed and cherished by the kids and their families. Volunteering does not have to be a full-time job, and we will be flexible to meet your schedule. Thank you in advance for considering the donation of your time to help others!

For Baseball & Softball Teams Buddies

  • Please select one coach to be the full-time pitcher.
  • The rest of the players and coaches will be buddies for the players.
  • Wear your team jersey or company attire, or just come as you are!
  • Each buddy must bring a baseball glove to wear.
  • Wear tennis shoes (no cleats will be allowed on the rubberized surface).

Meet your player and warm up

  • Meet at the field at the designated arrival time.
  • All buddies will be briefed by a coach from Miracle League
  • Once the players start arriving, you will be paired up. The coach and/or a person that knows the player, i.e. a parent, can fill you in on the player's abilities.
  • Grab a ball and warm up with your player (no batting during warm up).

The Game

  • Buddies should stay with their player whether they are in the field or the dug-out.
  • There will be line-up posted, so you will know what position your player is and when they are up to bat.
  • Have your player ready when they are up to bat, encourage them to wear a helmet, however some will not want to wear a helmet and that is fine.
  • Assist the player when they are at bat when it is necessary.  Once they hit the ball, direct them to first base. Stay with your player as they advance to each base (one base per hit).  Beware, some players may want to continue to 2nd base and even head on to home, which is fine, just keep an eye on them.
  • Assist your player when in the field, hang out next to them and let them do as much as possible.
  • Whether batting or in the field, assist your player as needed.  Help keep them safe from fly balls and bats and have fun.
  • At the end of the first inning, meet at the pitcher’s mound to sing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” with the players.
  • At the end of the game, line-up for high-fives with the all the players.
